WASHINGTON - A sweeping new report of HIV/AIDS numbers in D.C. from 2001 to 2006 offers new statistics on what officials call a "modern epidemic," with one in 20 district residents being infected with HIV and one in 50 having the advanced form of the infection, AIDS.http://wtop.com/?nid=596&sid=1298455The report says that since 2001, 80 percent of infections they identified were in black men, women and adolescents. Of the infected women, nine out of 10 were African-American.
The 120-page report to be released Monday is the first statistical snapshot offered on HIV in the District. Experts say it shows how the condition that was once considered a gay disease has moved into the general population.
Shannon Hader, head of the District's HIV/AIDS Administration, says the report "blows the stereotype out of the water."
According to the report, 25 years after the disease was first identified, the city's total number of AIDS cases is more than 17,400.
Mayor Adrian Fenty is scheduled to make remarks about the report later this morning.
