I'd like to throw in Angela's Ashes as more profound than into the wild. And The Godfather. That movie will make you look at everything through the context of characters and situations from that book and movie.

life is beautiful is way more profound than any movie in the world. I'm a 21 year old black dude and I felt like the narrator was my Jewish grandfather
telling me about the old days and peppering in life lessons.

JohnnyRedStorm wrote: you should def watch them. 2001 and blade runner are very hit or miss though. Theres a 90 percent chance you won't have any idea what's going on in 2001 (I sure didn't), mainly because 2/3 of the movie has no dialogue. When watching you should also remember that the movie came out a year before the moon landing even happened which makes everything even more amazing because of how well done it all is. I see the movie very differantly most times I watch it it grows on you like a virus. Don't feel bad if you hate it though. many people think that it's a pretentious boring piece of drivel and that kubrick just took as many shots of space as possible and threw together a meaningless movie and his fans have created all the meaning and "deepness". The book by arthur c. clarke helps the plot make more sense. blade runner you may want to watch the one with the voiceovers first because they give some crucial details. However the directors cut is much better because it doesn't dumb down anything and doesn't have the "happy ending". The producers forced harrison ford to do the voiceovers and you can really hear it in his apathetic reading oh I can't belive i forgot ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST |

DubA169 wrote:No doubt those are all powerful films but completely different in the ways in which they are cathartic. Many of those mentioned are psychological thrillers or center around questions of morality and violence. Into the Wild is neither. It deals with one's own quest for fulfillment, in this case, in response to the wilderness. Regardless of how you view the film or McCandless, Penn did a fantastic job of translating the overall feeling of the book, particularly the ethereal beauty of nature onto the screen. Emile Hirsch and Hal Holbrook also turn in excellent performances, making it an enjoyable two and a half hours. 20% off karmaloop.com with code: JBOAT |

^ I never thought about it like that but now that I look at the list you are right. I guess I feel like cathartic movies give more meaning to what I'm
watching on the screen and has a direct impact on me after the movie is finished. I suppose that's my own definition of what a "powerful" movie
is. Without that cathartic element it just seems like entertainment, not something powerful with direct impact on the viewer.

I enjoyed this movie so much.....
My GF thought i was crazy, because i was so into it i REFUSED to be interrupted..... What he did took a lot of guts, and he had a lot of good experiences.....I'm def going to watch it again... As someone else said though, i couldnt help but think....He could've found another way to deal with his issues... Just seemed like such a loss of a good dude, i think he couldve affected more people with the way he was thinking... That couple he ran into , they seemed like they had a nice journey going on also..... DS 11/12 CDP sz 10 FOR RETAIL IN NYC, IF NOT + 15 BUCKS FOR

I enjoyed the movie a lot, but that's because I've with a lot of the themes that were discussed in the movie: journeying into the wild, relinquishing
our material belongings, and sharing happiness with others. I enjoyed the soundtrack a lot as well. This was a movie tat was nice to see once, but I'm not
sure I'd watch it again. The movie reminds me to be extra careful as I prepare for the Pacific Crest Trail.
My roommate didn't enjoy it as much as I did. Although he embraces the themes, they weren't attractive to him and he didn't like the pacing of the movie. He felt let down by the ending, but the message hit him harder because of it. But, he still said it was a good movie. |

All I got from the movie was the following: A rich kid abandons his parents who gave him everything he would need to succeed, throws away his life by going
"into the wild" knowing absolutely NOTHING about survival skills, and dies what I'm assuming is a slow painful death inside an old bus. Way to
go! Oh wait...

Think of it this way though. His departure brought his parents together.Or think of it this way: he did exactly what he wanted to do. I could discuss this all night, but like I said, I don't want to be an ^!+ and spoil the story for someone else who isn't familiar with it. |
