Money is important because we use it in our society as currency.. currency that has value. We've come a long way from everyone being farmers or
hunter-gatherers; people specialize in different fields now enriching society as a whole. Food is important, but we don't all need to grow it ourselves
anymore. Money basically lets you do things you want to do - it's power, it's leverage.
Try living life on minimum wage and you will see how hard it is to live life without any leverage or power. It's like trying to play the game of basketball with one arm. You are severely handicapped and your opportunities on the court are limited. Lets see what money can buy you: More nutritious food Free up your time so that you can spend it with family, friends, or on bettering yourself such as working out, learning new skills, etc. A house in a safer neighborhood where you won't get robbed or shot Cleaner environment. Better schools. Better car that wont' break down. Opportunities - you have the money to seize opportunities, such as starting a new business, or investing in something. these allow you to earn even more money I could go on and on.. but as you see in a capitalistic society, such as the one most of the people in the world now live in, money is very, very important. You don't necessarily need $1million dollars, but at minimum I'd say a middle-class salary is required to live a decent, hassle-free life. Being broke or poor in America is NOT pretty because there aren't many support systems like there are in socialist countries. If you're poor you might get food stamps and some free health assistance but that's about it. You'll still live in a rough neighborhood and won't be able to afford much else. Now if we were living in the jungle and in simpler times, where everyone hunted or grew their own food and the community took care of each other, then money wouldn't be as important, although the concept of value would still exist. For example, the farmer with the largest number of goats has more power, and you can look at the goats as a form of money. Those goats have value and he can trade them to others for things he wants. Money in the form of currency just makes it easier for value to change hands, because now we can just use pieces of paper. |

its all about finding that balance.. one could be so rich that he has to work so much that he never sees his kids. or he's just out of touch with reality
and a real douche bag. the kid doesnt need a 4 million dollar home and NO father around.. for some that status gets to them. the kid may have the best doctors
and best foods around, but on a personal level, it may screw with him.. i guess its all about finding happiness... i mean whos better off? the rich kid who has
no true family but gets into a good school and is "set for life" or the kid with a big family that is tight with all of them that graduates from a
modest university and "struggles" with mid tier jobs all his life.

Personally, I've come to the conclusion that money is absolutely worthless, as oxymoronic as it may sound.
Is it essential to live a comfortable life in this kind of society--probably... But the real question you need to ask yourself is--what is at the heart of being comfortable? ... Do you need to live in a 5 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath house in a gated community to be comfortable-- Do you need to send your kids to a fancy and expensive school to be comfortable-- Do you need to dine out 4x out the week in the city to be comfortable-- Do you need to drive a BMW x MERCEDES x AUDI to be comfortable-- Do you need to shower your wife in LV and Gucci to be comfortable Do you need to take summer and winter vacations to fancy getaways to be comfortable-- ... As a society, we've def. reached the point where our definition of "comfortable" is grossly exaggerated. You def. need money for certain things, but the great majority of the time, the driving force behind peoples need to attain MORE money is so that they can lavish and satiate themselves in unnecessary extravagances. Incidentally, the drive to acquire and attain MORE money is often times, the proverbial nail in the coffin. I say this because, to attain the money necessary for luxuries of life, one must devote more unnecessary work--which requires more power and time (word to physics)-- to things that really don't matter; and subtract devotion from things that really do matter. A few studies in the realm of cultural anthropology have shown that, relative to "advanced" Western societies, many bush (Kang San for example) societies live longer and relatively more happy lives because they don't encumber themselves with the unnecessary. Their lives are simple--foraging for just enough to eat and spending more time with the family. (Now granted, many of these groups have high mortality rates for infants, due to health issues, which money can solve, i'd say that they have the meaning of life and the secret for happiness figured out). But don't want to believe these studies, then simply read the Economy chapter (the first chapter) of Thoreus Walden. He pretty discusses why money and the drive to attain it is wholly unnecessary... ... All that matters is that I KNOW YOU. As for me, I prefer to stay in the shadows with the Usual Suspects...'matter o'fact, you can call me Keyser Soze...
