What happened to skate shoes? |
Lead | ||
|
I remember when skate shoe designs were forward thinking and innovative. Companies like DC, eS, and others were putting out designs that were utilizing new
materials to cushion and protect the foot from the rigors of skating. Since 2002-+!@, it seems things have changed. It's all about the same basic
construction with very minor changes and absolutely no innovation. Just leather, with either a vulcanized or cupsole construction. I remember when Rob
Dyrdek's first signature shoe came out it was a big hit b/c it offered the first form of lace protection. Now from what I've seen, his past few shoes
have taken a huge step backwards since then. In my opinion, the only shoe company that has actually put out a true PERFORMANCE skate shoe in the past few years
is nike! Every other company just seems to make the same overly bulky 80's looking throwback with a huge tongue. As an aspiring shoe designer, I see so
many things wrong with today's skate shoes that it drives me nuts. As of now I've made it one of my goals in my design career to work for a skate shoe
company and hopefully put out a product that focuses on performance instead of just pure aesthetics.

I think that immediate popularity of SB scared a few companies. They tried a resurgent "retro" theme, but obviously it hasn't worked out too well
(maybe with the exception of Supra). I agree though. Osiris, DC, even Vans were all companies I couldn't wait to see what new product they would drop...
now, 95% of the time, I see it, and it's a "meh".

Me too, although Vans has been a hit with their slip-ons and eras. I used to like skate shoes in the 90s becasue of how different they looked and how the felt
when I put them on. Now its either for style, or just to catch up to other companies for money. Right now, only Vans and Nike SB are the most popular.

I usually don't even bother looking at skate shoes unless they're SBs/6.0s or Vans.
Those gigantic tongues and simplistic designs are definitely unappreciated.

when all there that's available is simple designs with gigantic tongues it's not hard to see why they're unappreciated. Thick tongues don't
really serve any sort of functional purpose. If anything, they degrade fit. I miss shoes like the DC Reason, Jewel, Exacta, Williams, and countless other late
90's- early 00's shoes that had some more style to them. Not to completely bash old school clean designs, but when that's ALL I see in current
skate shoes, it gets old really quick.

I've been skating for going on 22 years, I have had vision street wear, airwalks, but i've always stayed true to vans because they never have really
changed their style when it comes to skate shoes. wish airwalk would re release the prototypes from the 80's, miss those with the lace savers

I agree with the above...Nike SB caused a stir in the skate shoe world so all these shoe companies started making their shoes more simplistic and retro if you
will...It's because of this that most skate shoes today are basically the same shoe (Tech wise that is)...I remember how amazing it was when the Circa
CM901's released back in the day's...Those were amazing tech packed shoes...Now companies like Osiris and Circa are all but dead in the
water...it's a shame.

I like the simple retros, infact I like the simple skate shoes that weren't so fat. The ones with all the doo-dads felt way to clunky for me to skate in.
My favs are the simple: Vans, eS Accel, Etnies SAL 23, Emerica Marc Johnson...plus they had to be suede, I loved skating suede

Circa and Osiris also jumped the shark when their teams picked up some questionable riders. D3s were/are straight foolish. Seems a lot of skate shoe companies
becoming more mainstream led to the design teams thinking about sales than innovation. Which was probably the reason Airwalk fell off so bad with DC, etnies,
DVS, Adio, etc. following to an extent with their many different shoes which look very similar and only a few skate good.
Not to mention the whole retro/boardfeel/tight pants movement which has killed the whole moonboot/swishy cargo pants look of the '90's. I like kind of puffy tongues (not pillowy but not flat either) since they protect my instep from the board and make it so I don't have to tie my shoes tight. Sucks when a board hits you in the front of the ankle or achilles. It's silly to see 'pro model shoes' which are basically the same design as some shoes that have been around for years (adidas campus, Nike Dunk, etc.) with a few cosmetic tweaks but the main thing is that they sell and skate good which is why companies still make them. Used to love shoes like the Axion Kareem Campbell, Guy Mariano, DC Rick Howards, DVS Sean Sheffey but air bubbles seem like overkill unless you're skating stairs and only seem to make the shoe heavier, less stable and more expensive. At least with simpler cheaper shoes for the same price of a pair of shoes during the '90's you could probably get 2 or 3 pairs of shoes.

The Legacy?
Picture taken from nikesb.org thread. Rad looking shoe but felt like they'd skate terrible. All that rubber wasn't grippy and the sole felt weird with that Soap Shoe indent in the middle. Maybe they were decent for vert skating since they were a Danny Way x Colin McKay dual pro model. I had the orange/grey/black ones but forgot what happened to them. The all black ones were sick. If only there was a site with catalog scans from back then.

I had the royal blue version of these shoes. To me they were awesome to skate in. The high rubber all around enabled great protection. Still one of my

The DC Reality was the best of the dual sig concept IMO. The DC Jewel is also incredibly underrated as well.

simple shoes are more functional to skate in, there is a reason why alot of people still skate in Vans, and it isn't style.

Exactly. Comfortable shoes which skate good and break in within a few hours for $50-60 > moon boots that last forever but have no board feel and cost nearly
$100
The whole love for 90's skate shoes is fueled by nostalgia. I have a feeling a lot of designs if brought back would sit on shelves after the initial wave of purchases by older guys. Bought some crazy DC Boxer type shoes with the air bubbles (forgot which ones they were) and just ended up reselling them without wearing them since just taking them out of the box they felt like bricks. After the air bubble on my Huf 3's crumbled I have since given up on unnecessary technology. Don't skate stairs that much and if anything air bubbles seem to increase the chances of ankle rolls instead of preventing heel bruises. Zoom insoles are okay though. |

the designs were nice back then....but when you think about all that stuff on the shoe actually hinders your skating.
zoom insoles are good. I like the blazers nike sb puts out. gotta be suede though... on a side note lakai just put out a retro version of the koston 1 when he was with es' .....waiting for it in the mail!!!! http://www.utilityboardsupply.com/get_item_las558.htm

Supra put out some good shoes, but I have to agree about the prices of
skate shoes are kinda high because of there popularity. I got some DVS shoes and they were only 65 and I love them till this very day, very durable shoes and
so comfy.

while I agree that a lot of 90's skate shoes had too much tech that made for overly bulky product, at least it seemed like companies cared about designing
a more cushioned, durable product, even if they didn't really get it right. The thing they should have realized is that you gotta keep trying. It's
like, "oh people are complaining about bulk and lack of board feel." well then let's just play it safe and just go back to what we know works
instead of trying to improve on our current concepts. As someone in the design field, that's such a cop out thing to do.
seriously if shoes for any other sport followed the design mentality of the skate game, we'd all still be playing in chucks. And what the heck happened to lace protection, like internal lacing ala koston 3? I would love to see someone try to tell me that that isn't a necessary feature for a skate shoe. |
