Who is boycotting the Olympics? Thoughts on China's human rights abuses. |
Lead | ||
|
With international attention focused on China for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Chinese and world citizens alike have voiced protest against China's human
rights abuses. Often these have led to violence as the repressive Chinese government limits freedom of speech and press, incarcerating many and inciting bloody
riots. Whether one is against the occupation and suppression of Tibet, China's inability to control Sudanese violence in Darfur, rampant environmental
pollution, or authoritarian regime that limits and offends civil and human rights, now more than ever is the time to educate oneself on such important matters.

I inadvertently boycott the Olympics every year out of sheer disinterest, but this is a far better reason.

I'm not denying the reasons behind such a protest, but how many of the protesters avoid buying/using anything made in China? The fact that you posted this
on a message board from some sort of computer almost certainly implicates you in some way. Not that "it won't do anything anyway" is any excuse
for the actions of the Chinese government, but to put effort into a relatively useless protest seems to be wasteful of time better spent elsewhere personally.
Then again, I wouldn't be watching the olympics anyway.

every time i pass by chinatown in sf, theres people handing out fliers talking about china's human rights violations. i dont think people can grasp how
serious it is without seeing the pics.
you got to also boycott products from their sponsors and what not. going to be interesting when the torch arrives in sf... i hear germany and sweden are boycotting the opening ceremonies, any truth to that? crowd is growing outside of city hall when i pass by it at work these last few days.

It's a tough scenario. On one hand, the Olympic games is suppose to be a celebration of sports and unity, kind of like a timeout from the real world.
It's also tough on the athletes who have trained for several years.
IMO, if a boycott is done, is has to be across the board, meaning not just the opening ceremonies, but the entire 2 weeks. Then comes the important issue, not boycotting the games, but boycotting the imports we receive from them. Looking at the entire scope of things, boycotting the games won't mean that much, but not buying items from China would have more of an impact. It's exponentially tougher, but that's the point. |

I disagree with China and how it's handling the situation with Tibet, but as illmaticsoulchild said, the Olympic games are a time of unity throughout the
entire world. Athletes train all their lives to get a chance to participate in these games, and taking it away from them is a shame.

The Olympics this year presents a good opportunity for Tibet to bring world attention its cultural oppression by China. There are many people around the world
that empathize with the culture of Tibet, and information of China turning protests violent, killing scores of Tibetans and Buddhist monks has galvanized
protest.
I really like what the people at Wikileaks are doing, and especially what they have to say on matters of social injustice, censorship, repressive regimes, etc. Sorry if the pics make you queasy, but I think the world has the right to know when governments orchestrate violence against people, especially ethnic/cultural/religious groups. Censorship, like communism, seems like a reasonable enough idea to begin with. While 'from each according to his ability and to each according to his need' sounds unarguable, the world has learned that these words call forth a power elite to administer them with coercive force. Such elites are quick to define the needs of their own members as paramount. Similarly 'from each mouth according to its ability and to each ear according to its need' seems harmless enough, but history shows that censorship also requires an anointed class to define this "need" and to make violence against those who continue talking. Such power is quickly corrupted. |

As much as I'm against China's human rights violations I do not think that the Olympics should be used as a political tool to get that point across.
The Olympics should be one of the only things in this world that can transcend the differences and issues that all the countries of the world have with one
another. And yes, I am aware of previous Olympic boycotts such as those in 1980 and 1984 and I am strongly opposed to them as well.
and that's real.
